What is Steganography?

Steganography is the process of storing a secret message with ordinary content, generally images and then extracting the message, when it reaches the destination.

Steganography is originated from the Greek word steganos meaning “covered” and the Greek word graphie meaning “writing”.

Uses of Steganography

It is  assumed that terrorist groups make use of Steganography to secretly communicate internally. It is also rumored that some terrorist organization like Al-Qaeda uses Steganography by posting some image on random websites and they secretly share their information online.

How it works?
Steganography Techniques usually append the data to a file.

Steganography Programs use Specially Crafted Algorithms which place the Encrypted Data in such a way that a unique patterns emerges. Not visible to any other program, except for the same program.

File extensions that are generally used to Carry Hidden messages are as follows:
•bmp
•jpeg
•gif
•wav
•mp3

I will write articles on How to hide data behind images in my next post.
