In this tutorial I am going to show you how to install BackTrack 5 R3 in a virtual machine. This is really simple do if you know the very basic knowledge about virtual machines. So, let us get started.
What You’ll Need
You will require simply two things; BackTrack OS and VMware Player.
BackTrack OS:
You can download these OS from here.
- Just go the link and click Download.
- In Select Require Version select BaclTrack 5 R3
- In Window Manager i would prefer to select GNOME (Coz it looks clean and nice) but you can select KDE. (They are the flavors of Backtrack)
- And in Architecture Choose 32 for a 32-bit architecture and vice-versa
- In Image Type select ISO
- And At last you can select your preferred download type. Usually I use Torrent.
VMware Player
Although there are other virtual machines, I would recommend you to use VMware Player which is free and is compatible with Windows. There is also a paid version of VMware known as VMware Workstation available which have some extra features. But everything we need is available in VMware Player. The process in both these software are almost same.
To Download VMware Player go to this link.
If they ask you to register in their site to download the software then do it as its free. After you have downloaded the software double click it and install it . Just click next, next, continue and so on and the installation will be complete.
Installation
Step 1: Open VMware Player
Step 2: Click on Create a New Virtual Machine
Step 3: In Installer disc image file browse the ISO file we before downloaded and click Next
Step 4: In the Guest Operating System select “Linux” and in version select Ubuntu 32-bit for 32-bit Architecture BackTrack and Ubuntu 64-bit for 64-bit Architecture BackTrack and click Next.
Step 5: Give a name to your Virtual Machine and leave the location as it is but change it if you do not have enough disk space on that particular drive.
Step 6: Here make the disk size 20.GB which would be enough if you don`t put movies and other large files. In the option below it; select “Split virtual disk into multiple file” and again click Next.
Step 7: Inc the next window click “customize hardware” and specify 1 GB memory for it. If you do not have 1 gigs then you can allocate 512Mb also, it will be enough.
Step 8: Then go to Network Adapter and select “Bridged: connected directly to the physical network” and check on replicate physical network connection state also. Now, click close and then again click Finish and power on the Virtual Machine just created.
Step 9: Wait some time and the following pictured page will come and there click Enter on “Backtrack Text- Default Boot Text Mode”
Step 10: A next window will open like the following image and there type startx to get GUI and press Enter.
Step 11: A GUI(Graphical User Interface) will open and in the Desktop area there will be a “Install Backtrack” icon. Double-click to open it.
Step 12: There select your preferred language and click forward.
Step 13: A “where are you” box will come where you select your Region and Time zone and then click Forward.
Step 14: In Keyboard layout leave everything as it is and click forward again.
Step 15: So, in Prepare disk dialog box also leave everything as it is and click forward again.
Step 16: At last, Ready to Install dialog box will come. And there Click Install and let it do all the rest. The installation will take some minutes (20min – 40min or more) so just sit and relax for some minutes.
Step 17: After everything completes “Installation Complete” dialog box will pop-up where you should click “Restart Now” which saves all the settings and restart the virtual machine.
Step 18: And then after the Reboot a window will appear which will prompt you for you BT username and password. So, for this type the following italic words in each of the the following prompt:
bt login : root
Password : toor
They are the default username and password but you can change them later if you want.
bt login : root
Password : toor
They are the default username and password but you can change them later if you want.
Final Step: After that just type startx as before to start the the GUI and there is your completely installed BackTrack. It is not like live booted BackTrack using CD or USB drive where you will lose all you saved work in your next restart.
The tutorial was quite long but i made it out like this so that you get everything clear. You can also install other Operation Systems like Ubuntu, Windows and even MAC OS in VMware.
